SYRIZA condemns new Israeli bombardments in Gaza
Main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance unequivocally condemned "the new Israeli bombardments in Gaza on a series of civilian infrastructures, which have tragically resulted in dozens of civilian deaths, in violation of international humanitarian law".
In a statement, the party's Foreign Policy Section said that "no appeal to the right to self-defence can be accepted when the actions of the Israeli Armed Forces have resulted in tens of thousands of civilian deaths". On the contrary, these actions contribute to the perpetuation of the vicious cycle of violence in the Middle East", it said.
The party also underlined that "the international community should stop adopting a passive stance on the Palestinian issue and actively support UN efforts for an immediate ceasefire, the return of all hostages, the unimpeded provision of humanitarian aid and the resumption of negotiations for a two-state solution based on the 1967 borders". It added that "at the same time, Mitsotakis' government must move in this direction in view of its assumption of the position of non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, and undertake peace initiatives".
