SYRIZA announces election for party leader November 24

The left-leaning SYRIZA party, shaken by a wave of resignations following the recent ousting of former leader Stefanos Kasselakis, announced on Thursday that it will hold a leadership election on November 24, with a potential second round scheduled for December 1 if necessary.

Four party delegates – Sokratis Famellos, Nikolas Farantouris, Apostolos Gletsos, and Pavlos Polakis – have been announced as candidates for the election.

According to an official party announcement, all SYRIZA members will be eligible to vote in the presidential elections.

New party members throughout Greece will need to have registered by November 24 to be eligible to vote, while party members voting from abroad will be able to cast their votes online, the announcement stated.

Details on polling booths around the country are expected to be announced within the next few days.

The recent ousting of Kasselakis as party leader, condemned by many members as undemocratic, triggered a wave of resignations, including several by MPs, leaving the party on the verge of losing its status as the main opposition.

Last weekend, Kasselakis announced the formation of his own political party, still not named.
