Parliament’s health committee began reviewing legislation to strengthen protections for minors from tobacco and alcohol products, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis has announced.

The bill introduces criminal liability for servers and bartenders who serve alcohol to minors, extending beyond current penalties that target only business owners. “From now on, when a server or barman serves alcohol to a minor, they will also have criminal responsibility,” Georgiadis said.

New measures include mandatory ID checks for tobacco purchases, prohibiting automatic alcohol vending machines, and requiring special platform registration for youth events at venues that normally serve alcohol.

The legislation also bans minors from all forms of smoking and vaping. Parents can no longer send children to buy cigarettes at kiosks, a common practice in Greece.
