The Greek Safer Internet for Kids helpline has reported a staggering 63% increase in calls since 2023, reflecting a worrying trend in internet addiction among children. Nearly 9 out of 10 calls come from concerned adults—mainly parents—struggling to manage their children’s screen time.

“Parents tend to call when they feel powerless,” says Maria Dara, a psychologist at the helpline. She warns that simply imposing strict internet limits can often backfire, triggering anger or even violent outbursts from children. Instead, Dara urges early intervention, open communication, and emotional support.

Physician Giorgos Kormas, who leads the helpline and visits schools to raise awareness, notes a growing link between internet use and school absenteeism. “I used to think it was rare, but I’ve seen it across many schools,” he says. “Children stay up all night online and can’t wake up for school. Some parents turn to homeschooling to maintain a sense of routine.”

The Safer Internet for Kids helpline is available at 210.600.7686, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
