Greece is set to experience a deterioration in weather conditions, with locally heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast from late Tuesday night, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).

Greece is set to experience a deterioration in weather conditions, with locally heavy rain and thunderstorms forecast from late Tuesday night, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).

The severe weather is expected to begin in the Ionian Sea and spread on Wednesday, Christmas Eve, to western Greece, parts of central and northern mainland areas, and the northern and eastern Aegean islands. Conditions are forecast to ease gradually, with weakening expected in western regions late Wednesday night into Thursday, Dec. 25, and in other areas by Christmas afternoon.

According to EMY’s emergency weather bulletin, heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected:

In the Ionian islands until late Wednesday night.

In Epirus, western Thessaly, western and central Central Greece and western Peloponnese from Wednesday midday until the early hours of Christmas Day.

In Western Macedonia briefly overnight on Christmas Eve.

In Central Macedonia from early Wednesday afternoon through Christmas afternoon.

In Eastern Macedonia and the northeastern Aegean islands from Wednesday night until Christmas afternoon.

Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and follow safety instructions during the severe weather period.
