Seven nongovernmental organizations are under investigation for allegedly aiding and abetting rackets that smuggle migrants into Greece, sources in the country’s Shipping Ministry have said.

Having involved many different ministries and agencies, the months-long probes are now reaching maturity, resulting in case files being compiled against the suspected organizations.

In a meeting with his Migration Ministry counterpart, Makis Voridis, on Thursday, Shipping Minister Vassilis Kikilias underscored the need for more transparency in NGOs’ activities and in their funding sources. Voridis said that a new framework for their operation is under consideration, while the pair also discussed the possibility of special, stricter sanctions against NGOs found to be involved in migrant smuggling.
