European Commission calls Chios migrant deaths a tragedy
The European Commission described the deaths of migrants off the Greek island of Chios as a tragedy, saying that the investigation into the incident is the responsibility of Greek authorities.
At least 15 migrants were killed and 24 others, including 11 children, were hospitalized after an inflatable dinghy carrying migrants collided with a Greek Coast Guard vessel and overturned late Tuesday. Greek Coast Guard authorities have launched an internal review into the circumstances of the accident.
Commission spokesperson Marcus Lammert said the EU was closely monitoring developments and remained in contact with Greek authorities as search and rescue operations continued. He stressed that every human life lost at sea is a tragedy and highlighted ongoing EU efforts to combat human trafficking in cooperation with partner countries.
According to the Coast Guard, the dinghy struck the patrol vessel and capsized about 1.5 kilometers off Chios. Testimonies from survivors are expected to be collected as the investigation continues.
