Approximately 10,000 of 80,000 Israelis who have left Israel since October 7, 2023 have chosen Greece as their new home, according to a report by French newspaper La Croix.

In an article titled “Away from the ‘Promised Land’ and the war: Israelis settling in Greece”, the publication notes that many are relocating for professional reasons, while others are seeking to escape growing internal tensions and political unrest.

One such case involves a business consultant from Tel Aviv who left with her two young children immediately after the Hamas attacks. Citing strong opposition to the Netanyahu government and the war in Gaza, she has not returned.

“Israel is no longer a democracy. This war [on Gaza] is unjust and has no legitimacy,” she told La Croix, adding that expressing such views openly in Israel often leads to backlash.

Greece has become a key destination for Israelis in Europe, the report highlights, thanks to its proximity – just a two-hour flight from Israel – familiar climate and lifestyle, favorable visa policies, and a strong sense of safety.

The article underscores that, beyond personal security concerns, many are also motivated by deep political dissatisfaction and a desire for stability.
