The Risk Assessment Committee was convened again on Saturday by the Secretary General for Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou, regarding the severe weather expected.

The Risk Assessment Committee was convened again on Saturday by the Secretary General for Civil Protection, Nikos Papaefstathiou, regarding the severe weather expected.

According to the Committee’s scientists:

On Saturday, strong rain and thunderstorms will occur in the Eastern Aegean islands until midday and in the Dodecanese until late afternoon.

According to information from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the National Coordination Center for Operations and Crisis Management  will contact local authorities of the first and second degree, as well as all involved agencies, to ensure they are fully informed about the upcoming weather phenomena and placed in operational readiness.

Finally, it is reminded that the Regions and Municipalities of the Ionian Islands, Epirus, Western Greece, Peloponnese, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Northern Aegean, and Southern Aegean (Dodecanese) remain under “ RED CODE” readiness status.

More than 200 mm of rainfall in Tzoumerka as storm 'Adel' sweeps across Greece

According to the National Observatory of Athens (meteo.gr), by midday Friday the Tzoumerka region was the hardest affected area from storm "Adel", recording more than 200 millimetres of rainfall in just three days. Other parts of Greece also observed very high accumulated rainfall totals. According to the same data, the rainfall was persistent and locally intense, affecting almost all of Greece in successive waves. 

The rains began on Wednesday in Western Greece, the Peloponnese and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace and continued through Friday, when significant precipitation was recorded in the eastern part of the country as well, including the city of Athens. 

According to the meteo.gr / National Observatory of Athens station network, rainfall totals exceeded 100 millimetres at 36 stations, 80 millimetres at 63 stations, and 60 millimetres at 138 stations. In addition, three stations in Epirus-specifically in Tzoumerka-recorded more than 200 millimetres, further burdening an already difficult situation in the area, as total monthly rainfall for November has now surpassed 900-1,000 millimetres.
