Regional differences limit citizens' access to healthcare in Greece

Recent data from the European Statistics Office (Eurostat) has revealed that Greece is among the EU countries with the largest regional disparities in hospital access. While Athens is ranked among the best-served areas in Europe in terms of hospital access, many other regions of the country, particularly on islands, face significant challenges in accessing healthcare services.
Despite Greece having the highest number of doctors per capita in Europe, the country struggles with a lack of sufficient hospital services in many areas, especially in more remote or island regions.
Public discussions surrounding the issue emphasize the "severe geographical inequality" in Greece’s healthcare system. There are calls for restructuring and strengthening healthcare infrastructure, particularly in the islands and other isolated regions, to ensure more equitable access to healthcare services across the country.
The report highlights that these disparities are contributing to unequal healthcare access for citizens, urging immediate action to address the challenges.
