The first group of women participating in Greece’s voluntary military service program has officially begun their duties in the Hellenic Armed Forces, marking a significant step in the country’s defense personnel policy.

According to a report by Greek state broadcaster ERT, 72 women enlisted under the newly launched voluntary conscription scheme for women started service today within units of the Hellenic Army.

The initiative, introduced this year, allows women who choose to participate to serve in various capacities within the armed forces. As part of the program, participants are expected to benefit from incentives including additional points in public sector recruitment examinations, recognition of service time as prior work experience, and opportunities for university graduates to be assigned to roles such as nursing or administrative duties within the military. They will also have access to the social benefits provided by the armed forces.

Hellenic Army Commander General Giorgos Kostidis visited the newly assigned female soldiers at a military unit in the city of Lamia, welcoming the first cohort as they began their service.

Authorities confirmed that a formal swearing-in ceremony for the volunteer recruits is scheduled to take place on June 26.

The program is viewed as part of broader efforts to expand participation and modernize human resource structures within Greece’s defense sector.
