Racism allegations at Thessaloniki intercity bus service
Serious allegations of racist practices at Thessaloniki’s intercity bus service (KTEL) have come to light following a complaint by New Left MP Nasos Iliopoulos.
According to reports, staff refused to issue a ticket to an African passenger for the Athens–Thessaloniki route, despite available seats. Instead, he was directed to a “special night bus for foreigners.” When other travelers questioned the refusal, they were told: “For your safety, migrants travel at night.”
Iliopoulos condemned the practice, saying it resembled segregation policies of the American South in the last century. He announced he would bring the matter to parliament, calling on the Ministry of Transport and police to respond.
Local reports suggest this “night bus” has been operating for at least seven years, carrying only passengers of African or Asian origin, often in tourist-style coaches rather than official KTEL vehicles. Police have occasionally stopped the service for document checks, but the practice continues.
The revelations have sparked concerns about systemic discrimination and the responsibility of authorities to ensure equal treatment for all passengers.
