Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is expected to announce new initiatives on gun ownership and firearm controls in the coming days, government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis said in an interview with Mega TV on Wednesday.

Addressing the recent vendetta and tensions in the village of Vorizia, Crete, Marinakis noted that the government is preparing a comprehensive plan to tighten gun regulations.

“Very soon — possibly by the end of the week — the Prime Minister will make announcements, given his own Cretan roots, regarding specific measures on gun ownership, the licensing process, and the system of checks and inspections,” Marinakis said. “These announcements will not be empty words.”

The spokesperson also condemned attempts to stigmatize entire communities, stressing that law enforcement actions should remain targeted and fair. He cited comments by Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chrysochoidis, who revealed plans to permanently establish a branch of the Organized Crime Directorate on Crete, along with other security measures to be detailed by the Prime Minister.

Marinakis further urged cross-party unity on the issue, calling on PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis — who is also from Crete — and other political figures from the island to join forces.

“I don’t believe this is an issue that should divide us,” he said.
