PM Mitsotakis says Greece–Türkiye normalisation has delivered “Tangible results”
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has strongly defended Athens’ policy of maintaining “calm waters” with Türkiye, arguing that it has already produced measurable benefits in security, migration, and the economy.
Speaking at the 6th pre-conference of the New Democracy party, Mitsotakis said Greece’s foreign policy is designed to “consolidate peace and justice in the region” and restore a functional relationship with its neighbour.
He pointed to reduced airspace violations, lower migration flows, and increased Turkish tourism to Greek islands as evidence of success.
“These are tangible facts,” he said, adding that calm waters mean “free waters governed by international law.”
Migration and border security remain central priorities
The Prime Minister said government policy on migration aims to reduce inflows while increasing returns, claiming official data shows progress.
He also highlighted the expansion of the fence in the Evros region, now extended to 75 kilometres, describing it as a symbol of sovereignty.
“For us, the fence is a symbol of sovereignty; we do not require anyone’s permission to protect our home,” he said, adding that Greece will continue efforts to stop human trafficking networks.
Economic growth and fiscal performance highlighted
Mitsotakis also focused on Greece’s economic performance, stating that the country is growing at around 2%, outperforming the European average.
He said public debt is falling at a record pace for a developed economy and noted that a primary surplus has allowed the government to return €800 million to society since the start of the year.
Thessaloniki Expo redevelopment announced
The Prime Minister also announced that the redevelopment project for the Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) site will be put out to tender this summer, describing it as part of broader development efforts.
