Personal number to be issued via gov.gr starting June 3
The personal number, which will serve as a unified identifier for all citizens in their transactions with the state, will be issued through the myInfo application on gov.gr starting June 3, the Greek government has announced.
This number will replace the sector-specific numbers currently in use, such as the tax identification number (AFM), social security number (AMKA), and the ID number.
It will be assigned to all individuals who have either an AFM or an AMKA, regardless of whether they are Greek citizens or foreign residents.
To obtain it through the myInfo application, users will need Taxisnet credentials and a registered mobile phone number in the National Communication Registry.
The personal number will be unique and will not change throughout a citizen’s lifetime. It will consist of 12 characters: three alphanumeric elements – two of which are chosen by the citizen – and the individual’s Tax Identification Number (AFM).
It will be included on newly issued ID cards. However, those who have already issued new IDs will not need to replace them, as they can still access their number digitally.
