A U.S. Department of Defense official has stated that the United States does not have a military base in Alexandroupoli, Greece, clarifying that the facility in question is a Greek installation used under bilateral agreements between the two countries.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA) regarding recent Greek media reports claiming that the U.S. is planning to close its base in Alexandroupoli, the Pentagon official issued a written statement.

"The U.S. does not have a base in Alexandroupoli. This is a Greek facility to which the U.S. has access under the Mutual Defense Cooperation Agreement (MDCA),” the official stated.

Emphasizing that the site serves only as a logistical hub for the movement of U.S. equipment in and out of Europe, the official added:
"This is not a 'base' that the U.S. is closing."

Reports in Dimokratia and Ta Nea newspapers had claimed that U.S. President Donald Trump decided to shut down the American base in Alexandroupoli.

Dimokratia suggested that with the end of the war in Ukraine, the facility might no longer be necessary, while also asserting that its closure could strengthen Turkey’s influence over the Bosporus and enhance Ankara’s control over regional transit routes.

Meanwhile, Ta Nea reported that a reduction in U.S. support for Ukraine and a potential closure of the Alexandroupoli site could negatively impact Greece and other regional allies.
