New cancer database to help patients, doctors

A database will for the first time provide accurate information about cancer sufferers in Greece, including the types of cancers they are suffering from, the therapies being followed and their effectiveness in treating the conditions.

Officially called the National Registry of Patients with Tumorous Diseases, the database is ready and awaiting the input of oncologists and all other doctors involved in treating cancer patients, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced Tuesday.

The database, included in the e-Government Center for Social Security (IDIKA) website, will be an important part of an integrated treatment system for tumor and blood diseases, “one of the most exemplary [systems] in our effort to transform health through digital reform,” Georgiadis told a conference of cancer specialists.

The database will be coupled with an application including treatment protocols, which will start at the end of February with 12 such protocols and be completed within three months.

Patients will also be able to follow the type and progress of their treatment through a mobile app, which will be released in May. All 12 public hospitals specializing in cancer treatment across the country will also be connected to the system by the end of the year, allowing online consultations among doctors and between patients and their doctors. Eventually all public hospitals will join, Georgiadis said.
