Greek health authorities were on alert following the death of a 72-year-old livestock farmer from Elassona, central Greece, on Saturday, who contracted hemorrhagic fever after he was bitten by an infected tick.

According to Kathimerini, the doctor who attended to him is also ill, although her condition is not serious. Authorities are also monitoring relatives of the deceased man and other health workers who came into contact with the patient.

A team from the National Public Health Organization has taken blood samples from animals and insects at the man’s livestock unit, with results expected early next week.

This is the second fatal case of hemorrhagic fever in Greece since 2008, according to EODY.
