Leaked files raise questions over U.S. Ambassador’s spending in Athens
Leaked documents have put U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle under scrutiny, revealing costly upgrades at her official residence and plans for taxpayer-funded media services.
Reports claim that a €50,000 half-sized basketball court was approved for the ambassador’s residence in Athens, with additional features potentially increasing the cost. Separate documents also outline a proposed €25,000 annual contract for photography and video services to support her public appearances. The U.S. Embassy has not commented on the claims.
Since arriving in November, Guilfoyle has drawn attention for her high-profile presence, attending elite events, appearing courtside at basketball games, and building connections with prominent figures, including Olympiacos owners Panagiotis Angelopoulos and Giorgos Angelopoulos.
The reports have also revived criticism over past remarks she made in 2015, when she referred to Greeks as “freeloaders” during a TV appearance—comments now resurfacing amid growing scrutiny of her diplomatic style.
Beyond public appearances, Guilfoyle has taken an active role in strategic projects, including energy exploration near Corfu and port development in Elefsina, positioning herself within broader geopolitical efforts involving the U.S., China, and Greece.
While some officials credit her with accelerating key initiatives, others have raised concerns about her influence. Former foreign minister George Katrougalos warned that her approach can create the impression of excessive U.S. involvement in domestic affairs.
The controversy highlights broader concerns about spending, political visibility, and the evolving role of diplomacy, as Guilfoyle’s tenure continues to attract both support and criticism in Greece.
