Karpathos declares emergency over acute water shortage
Karpathos island has been placed under a three-month state of emergency following a significant deterioration in water availability caused by prolonged drought conditions and increasing seasonal demand.
The decision was announced by the authorities in response to critically low reservoir levels and concerns over the island’s ability to meet water needs during the upcoming peak tourist season.
Officials stated that extended periods of below-average rainfall, combined with rising temperatures, have substantially reduced water reserves. The anticipated influx of tourists during the summer months is expected to further strain the island’s limited infrastructure.
The emergency status grants local and national authorities expedited administrative powers to implement urgent measures aimed at stabilizing the water supply. These measures include the potential installation of temporary desalination units, emergency water transportation and accelerated infrastructure improvements.
Authorities emphasized that the primary objective of the declaration is to ensure uninterrupted access to water for residents and visitors while preventing severe shortages during the summer period.
Karpathos joins several other islands in the Aegean region that have faced similar water scarcity challenges in recent years, as climate variability and growing tourism continue to place pressure on local water systems.
