Israeli encroachment on Greek Orthodox church property in West Bank reportedly concerns Athens
Israeli settlers accused of seizing Palestinian land in the West Bank have allegedly encroached on property belonging to the Greek Orthodox Church, a development that has reportedly caused concern in Athens.
According to a report by Kathimerini, Greek authorities were alerted to violations involving land owned by the Greek Orthodox Monastery of Saint Gerasimos in the West Bank. In response, officials in Athens held an internal meeting to assess the situation.
The report noted that because the disputed areas belong to the Jerusalem Patriarchate, the issue may require a diplomatic process between Greece and Israel to be resolved. It added:
“For Athens, the protection of the property of Greek Orthodox monasteries is of great importance, and the matter could escalate into a dispute with Jerusalem — something Israel is aware of.”
The encroachments are viewed as part of broader concerns regarding Israeli settlement activity on Palestinian territory, which has long drawn international criticism.
