Injured American woman succumbs to injuries in Cretan hospital; family donates organs

A 33-year-old American woman who was hospitalized after falling in a ravine in Preveli a week ago was declared brain dead at the Chania Hospital on Crete and her organs donated by her family.

The woman had been in intensive care after being severely injured in the Rethymno region of the island. She also lost the child she was carrying..

According to Chania Hospital Director Giorogos Beas, the woman's family decided to donate her organs because she had been listed as an organ donor in the United States. A coordinated effort led to a team from the Athens Laiko General Hospital procuring her liver and kidneys for transplants to compatible donors. Her corneas will be donated to the Heraklion University General Hospital, he said.

The woman had severe head and other injuries and fought for her life with her family by her side.

Hospital administrators expressed condolences to her family and thanked them for the donations, and thanked everyone for coordination and organization that allowed the timely procurement and use of her organs.
