Tensions erupted in Aspropirgos, Athens and Chalkida, on Tuesday evening after the death of a teenager, 16, who was shot in the head by a police officer on December 5.

According to sate news agency AMNA yougns started fires at the Agia Zoi Roma camp at Aspropirgos, and they also blocked the suburban railway (proastiakos) tracks, after the youth, Kostas Fragoulis, died in an intensive care unit at Thessaloniki's Ippokration Hospital on Tuesday.

In Chalkida, some 80 people started fires blocking the rural road in the direction towards Stira, at the Kamares area, letting through only trucks and buses. Traffic there was later fully restored.

In central Athens, protesters held a rally, while police ordered the shutdown of metro station 'Panepistimio' at 18:00.

Incidents were also reported in other Greek cities, including Thessaloniki and Patras.

Earlier on Tuesday, police chief Lieutenant General Konstantinos Skoumas issued a high-alert advisory directive to police forces nationwide.
