A significant fraud case involving a female Greek UN employee in a high-ranking position was recently uncovered by UN agencies and referred to judicial authorities.

The case, which includes felony charges of fraud and forgery, was initially submitted by the UN to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. However, the office declared it lacked jurisdiction and forwarded the file to the Athens Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect, who had access to substantial UN funds, is accused of misappropriating over $1,000,000 between 2014 and 2021. Her fraudulent activities were exposed during a routine UN audit, which revealed that she had been submitting expense reports with forged documents.

Prosecutor Giorgos Noulis, who was assigned to the case, summoned the suspect for questioning. She denied the allegations, claiming to be a victim of her superiors and attributing the fraud to flaws in the monitoring system.

However, the prosecutor pressed charges for two felonies and referred the case to an investigative judge.
