Heavy rain and strong winds expected through Sunday
Authorities across Crete remain on alert as heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast to return Friday and continue through Sunday, after severe weather left one person dead and caused widespread damage.
Rethymno has suffered landslides, damaged roads and disruptions to water, sewage and power networks, with mountain villages among the worst affected. A search is also continuing for a livestock farmer who has been missing since Wednesday evening.
The national weather service EMY said northern and mountainous parts of Crete could face further heavy rainfall, while northeasterly winds of up to 8-9 Beaufort are expected in the Aegean.
Travel disrupted
Strong winds have disrupted ferry services. Sailings from Rafina and Lavrio were suspended, while several Piraeus services were cancelled, delayed or modified.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and warned motorists against using roads already damaged by flooding and landslides.
Civil Protection, the Fire Service, police, Coast Guard and Armed Forces remain on increased readiness as the new weather front approaches.
