GSEE: May 1st is a day of remembrance—It’s a strike day

For trade unions and the working class they represent, May Day is a day of strike, a symbol of rights and struggles for improved working conditions. The vision of the Chicago workers for a better and more dignified life remains highly relevant today, in an era where labor rights are shrinking and wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few elites.
This year’s May Day finds Greek workers grappling with soaring prices, a housing crisis, and a rapid deterioration in labor relations. Society is left defenseless, as basic public goods are being sold off, while healthcare and education are becoming privileges accessible only to a few. The government's narrative of economic prosperity is collapsing, with 60% of citizens saying they can’t make ends meet, and 88% admitting they are cutting back on basic food just to survive.
On May 1st, GSEE urges everyone to raise their voices in unity, honoring the ongoing global struggle of the working class for dignity at work, fair wages, and quality of life.
The union continues to demand:
- Enforcement of collective labor agreements,
- Active measures against inflation and the housing crisis,
- Setting the minimum wage through free collective bargaining instead of government decree,
- Stronger state oversight in workplaces to enforce the law and prevent workplace accidents,
- And universal access to quality public goods, especially education and healthcare.
The GSEE May Day rally, in cooperation with the Athens Labor Center, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 1st at Klafthmonos Square in Athens.
