Greeks spend longer in workforce, Eurostat data shows

Greeks are spending more years in the labour market, with expected working life increasing to 35.3 years in 2025, up from 34.8 years in 2024, according to the latest Eurostat data.

The figure has risen by more than three years over the past decade, from 32.1 years in 2014, reflecting social security reforms, demographic changes and longer participation in the workforce.

Despite the increase, Greece remains below the European Union average of 37.5 years. The Netherlands recorded the longest expected working life at 44 years, followed by Sweden and Denmark.

Gender gap remains significant

The data also highlights a wide gender gap in Greece's labour market.

Men are expected to spend 38.5 years in the workforce, compared with 31.8 years for women, the second-lowest figure in the EU after Italy.

The figures reflect persistent challenges facing women in Greece, including lower labour market participation and shorter professional careers.
