The Health Ministry announced plans to upgrade emergency departments (EDs) and on-call hospital services in 2025 to improve care and reduce overcrowding.

Major hospitals, including Attikon and Evangelismos, are expanding ED facilities, with Attikon increasing from 1,000 to 5,000 square meters. Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis said the upgrades, funded partly by the EU Recovery Fund, will modernize infrastructure and introduce new technologies, though temporary disruptions are expected.

Deputy Health Minister Marios Themistocleous noted early measures have reduced evening wait times by 20% at key hospitals. To ease pressure, primary care centers like Keratsini, which handles 350 patients daily, will receive 50 new staff to treat cases previously sent to hospitals.

The overhaul includes hiring 500 orderlies, launching digital patient tracking, and introducing a trauma law to standardize care. By 2026, patients will access real-time ED wait times via a mobile app. Georgiadis called the changes essential to transforming emergency care.
