Greece thanks countries for firefighting support
In a statement shared on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' social media, Greece thanked Türkiye, France, Moldova, Romania, Malta, Italy, Serbia, Cyprus, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the European Union for their support in the firefighting efforts. The message highlighted the solidarity shown by these nations during the crisis.
Türkiye, in particular, sent two firefighting planes and a helicopter, which arrived at Tatoi Military Airport after taking off from Athens' Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport. These Turkish teams are actively participating in the firefighting operations from this base.
The wildfires, which began on August 11 in the Varnava region near Athens, have spread rapidly due to strong winds, resulting in the loss of at least one life. The fire, described as the largest of the year, has led to the evacuation of three hospitals, two monasteries, and numerous residential areas, with over 100,000 acres of land reported to have been burned.
