Greece records 4,264 new organ donor registrations
Greece has recorded 4,264 new organ donor registrations following a government awareness campaign, while 324 transplants have been performed nationwide since the beginning of 2026, highlighting continued growth in donation and transplantation activity.
Between Oct. 10 and Oct. 18, the number of registered organ donors increased by 4,264, while the Hellenic Transplant Organization (EOM) information website received 11,392 visits.
The campaign was launched by Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis in cooperation with the Electronic Governance of Social Security (IDIKA) and EOM. It involved sending informational messages about organ and tissue donation to citizens enrolled in the electronic prescription system.
The initiative aimed to raise public awareness and make it easier for interested citizens to register in the National Organ Donor Registry.
324 transplants completed since January
Since the beginning of 2026, Greece has carried out 268 solid organ transplants from 119 deceased donors, alongside 56 kidney transplants from living donors.
The figures indicate that transplant activity has continued its upward trend for the sixth consecutive year, reflecting growing awareness of the importance of organ donation.
51 patients receive transplants in two weeks
The importance of voluntary organ donation was further highlighted over a recent two-week period, during which 51 patients received transplants from 12 deceased donors at 10 public hospitals.
Health authorities and transplant organizations continue to promote organ donation as an act of solidarity that can save lives and improve the quality of life of patients awaiting transplants.
