Greece prepares for harsh weather: Rain, storms, and snow on the horizon

A significant change in weather is expected to sweep across Greece this week, bringing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, colder temperatures, and the first snowfall of the season in the northern mountains, according to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY).

Midweek: Rain and cooling temperatures

Starting Wednesday, unsettled weather will take hold across central and southern parts of the mainland, along with Macedonia, the Ionian Islands, and Thessaly. Athens will face cloudy skies and rainfall, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 26°C. Thessaloniki can expect showers and cooler daytime highs near 22°C.

Thursday: Intensifying storms and falling temperatures

Weather conditions are expected to worsen on Thursday. EMY forecasts widespread rain and isolated thunderstorms, especially over the mainland, the Ionian Sea, Evia, the Sporades, and the northern Aegean. These storms are likely to extend to the Cyclades and Crete later in the day.

Some storms could be severe, and temperatures will continue to drop. Northern regions may see daytime highs between 16°C and 18°C, while most other areas will remain in the 20°C to 21°C range. The southern islands, including Crete and the Dodecanese, will stay relatively warmer, with highs between 24°C and 26°C.

Friday: First snow of the season in the North

Friday is expected to bring widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly intense in eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and parts of the Aegean. Mountainous areas in the north are likely to see the first snowfall of the season, signaling the arrival of winter conditions. Temperatures will continue to decline across the country.

Weekend Forecast: Gradual improvement

Showers are expected to persist over central and southern regions, as well as the eastern Aegean, through the weekend. However, conditions should slowly begin to improve. Winds will remain moderate to strong, and while temperatures will stay stable on Saturday, a slight warm-up is anticipated on Sunday, especially in central and northern Greece.
