Greece plans to end cash payments for courier deliveries
Greece is planning to make electronic payments mandatory for all cash-on-delivery transactions handled by courier companies, regardless of the amount, under a proposed regulation prepared by the Ministry of National Economy and Finance.
The proposed legislation would eliminate the existing €500 threshold for mandatory electronic payments, requiring customers to pay by electronic methods such as bank card, bank transfer or digital wallet instead of cash when receiving deliveries.
COURIER COMPANIES FACE FINES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE
Under the proposed rules, courier companies that accept cash payments in violation of the new requirements could face fines equal to twice the value of the transaction.
For example, a company accepting a €50 cash payment for a delivery could be fined €100.
RULES NOT YET IN FORCE
The measure has not yet entered into force. According to the report, implementation will depend on the publication of the relevant decision.
If adopted and implemented as described, the regulation would extend electronic payment requirements to all cash-on-delivery transactions handled by courier companies in Greece, regardless of their value.
