Gerapetritis at UNSC: No child should be denied the right to grow up

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, during his address at the High-Level Open Debate on the Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflicts at the UN Security Council, emphasised the rapidly deteriorating circumstances faced by civilians in conflict zones. Focusing on Gaza, he said that the humanitarian crisis had reached catastrophic proportions.

Gerapetris stressed that with more than 50,000 Palestinians dead and a complete cut-off of humanitarian aid for more than two months, "the level of human suffering is unprecedented". He stressed the need for full respect for international humanitarian law and the four Geneva Conventions.

Opening his intervention with a reference to Thucydides, he said that "war is a violent teacher". Gerapetritis warned that 80 years after World War II, the world is entering one of the most dangerous periods in modern history. He mentioned that there are currently 130 active conflicts around the world, referencing statistics provided by the President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mirjana Spoljaric. He also noted a rise in violence and displacement.
