Forest fires cannot be brought under control

The forest fires that have been raging in different parts of Greece, especially in Alexandroupoli and Evros Region since 19 August, could not be brought under control on the 6th day due to strong winds.

The fire on Mount Parnita, about 50 kilometres north of Athens, approached the settlements.

Due to the inability to carry out aerial extinguishing works at night, the fire in the region gained strength again with the effect of the wind.

While the aerial extinguishing works that started in the early hours of the morning continued, the residents of the Thrakomakedones settlement near Parnita were asked to be ready to evacuate the area if necessary.

Many roads leading to the area were closed to traffic.

Since 19 August, dozens of settlements were evacuated and dozens of buildings were burnt due to the fires that could not be brought under control.

More than 600 thousand acres of forested areas, agricultural land and residential areas were burnt down in the fires.

The Greek Meteorological Office noted that the smoke of the fire reached Malta and Sicily in southern Italy.
