Fifth victim found after Trikala biscuit factory explosion

Rescue teams on Tuesday recovered the body of the fifth—and final—employee missing after a powerful blast and fire ripped through the Violanta biscuit factory in Trikala on Monday, killing five workers.

State broadcaster ERT reported that the remains were found on the ground floor, near where three of the other four victims—all women—were located.

The explosion struck at 3:56 a.m. in the factory’s production wing during the night shift, where 13 employees were present. Eight workers escaped on their own, three were taken to hospital by ambulance, three arrived at hospital in private vehicles, and two stayed at the scene.

Authorities said identifying the victims will require DNA analysis due to the severity of the blast. Initial investigations suggest a gas leak from the ovens may have caused the explosion, possibly ignited by a spark from an unknown source.
