Farmers maintain nationwide blockades as protests intensify

Farmers across Greece continued their widespread mobilizations on Thursday, with hundreds of tractors still positioned at the Nikaia blockade on the AthensThessaloniki national road. Traffic is being rerouted through side roads under police supervision to prevent delays.

Daily assemblies at the Nikaia site are shaping ongoing strategy, while the Regional Council of Thessaly unanimously approved a resolution supporting the farmers. Regional Governor Dimitris Kouretas expressed full backing for their demands, stressing the importance of the primary sector to the regional economy. Farmers continue to call for measures to reduce production costs, which they say threaten the viability of many operations.

In Karditsa and Trikala, farmers remain at blockades on the E65 highway. They plan to join Saturday’s meeting of the Panhellenic Committee of Blockades in Nikaia to coordinate further actions. Local labor unions, student groups and pensioners’ associations are expressing daily support, as farmers signal readiness to escalate their protests.

Protest activity is also intensifying in Lamia, where farmers are blocking auxiliary roads, occupying toll booths and lifting barriers. Representatives from Central Greece are expected to attend a regional council meeting today to discuss agricultural demands and infrastructure issues. The Athens–Lamia motorway remains blocked at Bralos, Atalanti, Kastro and Thiva, while Evia has added a third blockade point. Blockades also persist in Schimatari (Boeotia) and Domokos (Phthiotis), affecting both the old national road and access to the E65.

In Crete, farmers from Heraklion, Rethymno and Lasithi maintained an overnight presence outside the Decentralized Administration of Crete in Heraklion. Their mobilization has entered its fourth day, with new decisions on future action expected later today.
