A total of 162 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece from the beginning of 2024 until September 11.

A total of 162 domestic cases of West Nile virus infection have been diagnosed and investigated in Greece from the beginning of 2024 until September 11, of which 121 cases presented manifestations from the Central Nervous System (CNS, encephalitis and/or meningitis and/or acute flaccid paralysis) and 41 cases had mild/no CNS manifestations.

According to EODY, during the last week 22 new domestic cases were diagnosed/declared. There were also four imported cases of the infection in patients exposed to other countries abroad (three in Albania and one in Austria), which were not included in the further analysis. A further two cases with complex travel histories are pending completion of investigation as to whether they are imported or domestic (also not included in further analysis).

A total of 25 deaths have been recorded in patients infected with the virus, aged over 60 (median age of those who died 80 years, range 61-93 years), eight in the last week. One additional death of a patient diagnosed with West Nile virus infection was attributed to another serious co-occurring health problem (not included in the total number of deaths).

Cases of West Nile virus infection in Greece have been recorded in 62 municipalities of the country, in 28 regional units.
