The film stars Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo, and is based on a book by Alasdair Gray, with the screenplay by the author and Tony McNamara.

The film is the story of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life during Victorian times by scientist Godwin Baxter, in a modern version of the myth of Frankenstein.

Lanthimos was congratulated by the Greek Film Center and the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
In a message on the occasion, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said the recognition was "a message of hope and uplifting for Greece" during a very hard time for the country. "The award confirms his innate talent, his entirely personal yet widely recognizable film signature, and, most of all, a long and fruitful, growing trajectory of creativity."
