Collective resignation from Movement for Democracy over alleged shift in party identity

A group of former members of Kίνημα Δημοκρατίας (Movement for Democracy) has announced its collective resignation, accusing the party leadership of deviating from its founding principles and weakening internal democratic procedures.

In a detailed public statement, the signatories argue that the party has drifted away from its Founding Declaration, which had promised a participatory, transparent political model centered on grassroots engagement and digital democracy.

“The entity into which the Movement for Democracy has evolved can no longer serve its Founding Declaration,” the statement reads.

Criticism of the Founder and Leadership

The former members express “deep disappointment” with the party’s Founder and President, claiming he has gradually and ultimately fully distanced himself from the principles he initially endorsed.

They allege that within two and a half years of political presence, the party shifted from a modern participatory center-left movement to what they describe as a personality-driven and vague “Progressive Center.”

The statement also accuses the leadership of adopting rhetoric and positions that resemble elements of “Trumpism,” including controversial foreign policy references.

Allegations of Internal Democratic Backsliding

Among the key concerns raised:

• The creation of a privileged internal circle within the party
• Limited accountability of certain MPs to party members
• Suppression of internal debate
• Ignoring dissenting voices within party structures

The signatories further criticize what they describe as an “anti-statutory congress parody,” claiming it dismantled collective decision-making mechanisms and replaced them with a leader-centric model.

Concluding their statement, the departing members emphasize that their move “is not a defeat but an assumption of responsibility,” reaffirming their commitment to democratic values, rule of law, and active civic participation.

According to the announcement, the full resignation text is being circulated for signatures via an online platform, with signatories’ names to remain confidential and disclosed only to the party leadership.
