Lisbon’s iconic Gloria funicular, a popular attraction for tourists, derailed and crashed, leaving at least 15 people dead and 18 others injured.

The funicular connects the Restauradores and Príncipe Real districts in the Portuguese capital and is frequently used by visitors. According to reports, five of the injured are in serious condition, while 13 others—including a 3-year-old child—sustained lighter injuries. Seven victims were transported to São Jose Hospital, while two others were taken to Santa Maria Hospital.

EU Council President Costa οffers condolences over Lisbon tram accident

European Union (EU) Council President Antonio Costa expressed his condolences regarding the tram accident in Lisbon via the social media platform of U.S.-based company X.

Costa, who was traveling to Paris at the time, said he learned about the incident after disembarking from his flight. He described the accident on the Gloria tram—a place of great personal significance—as deeply saddening.

Offering his sympathies, Costa extended condolences to the families of the deceased, wished patience to their loved ones, and a speedy recovery to the injured. He added, “I send my heartfelt condolences to Portugal and Lisbon.”

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also conveyed her sorrow over the accident and shared a condolence message in Portuguese.
