EU Court orders Le Pen family to repay €303,000 in misused EU funds

The European Union’s General Court has ruled that the family of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the late founder of France's far-right National Front (now Rassemblement National), must return €303,000 to the European Parliament, rejecting their appeal in a case dating back over a decade.

The court found that during his 2009–2014 term as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), Jean-Marie Le Pen had misused EU funds by allocating them for personal expenses under the guise of parliamentary work. Following his death on January 7, 2025, the legal responsibility transferred to his heirs, who continued to contest the repayment order.

However, the Luxembourg-based court concluded that no credible evidence had been presented to prove that the funds were used in compliance with EU rules. “The accused produced no evidence that the appropriations had been used in accordance with the applicable regulations,” the court stated. As a result, the basis for the European Parliament’s claim remained valid.

Importantly, the court also affirmed that the right to a fair trial had not been violated, countering claims made by the Le Pen family during the appeal process.

This case is not the only instance of alleged financial misconduct involving the Le Pen family. In 2017, Jean-Marie’s daughter and political successor, Marine Le Pen, faced similar accusations of irregular fund usage during her time as an MEP. She denied wrongdoing and refused to repay the funds, triggering a separate legal battle that is still ongoing.

The family now has the option to appeal this latest ruling before the Court of Justice of the European Union within two months.
