Stournaras sworn in for third term as Bank of Greece governor

Yannis Stournaras was sworn in on Wednesday for a third six-year term as governor of the Bank of Greece, extending his tenure as the country’s longest-serving central bank chief since the restoration of democracy in 1974.

By the end of his new term in 2032, Stournaras will have completed 18 years at the helm of the central bank, making him one of the longest-serving members of the European Central Bank’s Governing Council.

Stournaras took the oath before President Konstantinos Tassoulas in the presence of Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis.

The 69-year-old economist has led the Bank of Greece since 2014, following a period as finance minister during the country’s sovereign debt crisis. During his tenure, he oversaw monetary and financial policy through Greece’s recovery from a decade-long economic downturn and consistently advocated fiscal discipline, financial stability and structural reforms.

Following the ceremony, Stournaras said he would continue to focus on the central bank’s primary objectives of maintaining price stability and safeguarding the Greek financial system.
