Mitsotakis unveils €300 million support package to shield Greeks from global fuel shock

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced a €300 million package on Monday to support households and businesses amid the economic fallout from the war in Iran. The measures, effective April and May, aim to mitigate rising fuel and fertilizer costs while safeguarding ferry services and broader economic stability.

Mitsotakis outlined four targeted actions:

Diesel subsidy: The state will subsidize diesel at distribution by €0.16 per liter, benefiting consumers and businesses by €0.20 per liter at the pump.

Digital fuel card: Households can use a digital card at fuel stations, public transport, and taxis, providing an average benefit of €50 over two months on the mainland and €60 on islands. The card will cover roughly three-quarters of vehicle owners.

Fertilizer support for farmers: The government will subsidize 15% of fertilizer purchase invoices to relieve agricultural costs.

Ferry operator compensation: A new scheme will offset high marine fuel costs, linked to mandatory ticket discounts, keeping fares near last year’s levels.

To partially finance the package, profits from online “casino-type” gaming will be taxed, expected to raise €100 million.

Mitsotakis emphasized that the measures are possible due to Greece’s strong economic growth and prudent fiscal management. “These measures strengthen our social ‘buffers’ in turbulent times without jeopardizing what we have achieved,” he said.

The prime minister concluded: “The government stands—and will continue to stand—by every Greek citizen. Greece will overcome external challenges through unity and social cohesion, guided by a steady compass in uncertain times.”
