IRIS payments reach 126.4 million transactions in 2025
A total of 126.4 million transactions worth €10.9 billion, including same-bank payments, were carried out through Greece’s IRIS payments system in 2025, according to a joint white paper by DIAS and Capgemini Invent.
The report, titled “Scaling Account-Based Payments in Europe: The IRIS Case – An Account-Based Payment Success Story,” charts the system’s development over a decade, from its launch in 2016 to its adoption as an everyday payment method.
Interbank transactions rise sixtyfold
Interbank IRIS transactions increased from 1.6 million in 2020 to 95.4 million in 2025, representing a roughly sixtyfold increase over five years.
IRIS payments accounted for about 70% of Greece’s instant payment volume last year, highlighting the system’s growing role in the country’s digital payments market.
From payment service to daily tool
The study traces how IRIS evolved from a technically available payment service into a widely used transaction platform for citizens, professionals and businesses.
The sharp increase in usage reflects the growing adoption of account-based instant payments in Greece and the broader shift toward faster digital transactions.
According to the report, IRIS has become an established part of everyday payments in Greece, marking a significant transformation since its introduction in 2016.
