HEREMA receives EEA Grants funding for safety regulations at underground CO2 storage facilities

The Hellenic Hydrocarbons and Energy Resources Management Company (HEREMA) received a grant through the EEA Grants funded by Iceland, Lichtenstein, and Norway, to draw up safety regulations at underground carbon dioxide storage facilities.

The project applying for the funding is named "Safety regulations for offshore underground gas storage (CO2) and wind farm projects, as well as modern technologies and solutions in the field of floating wind farms adapted to Greek conditions" and its duration is from November 2024 to February 2025.

It is HEREMA's second project to be funded by EEA Grants, aiming again at the transfer of Norwegian technology know-how in the development of energy sectors, within the European framework of green transition.

Commenting, HEREMA said that Greece is preparing for a multilevel process to license and supervise underground gas storage facilities, despite the fact that the carbon capture and storage (CCS) state-of-the-art technology is being imported to Greece for the first time (carbon dioxide storage in Prinos, northern Greece). In addition, there is a need for targeted planning and strategic initiatives ensuring that Greece is properly prepared for coming developments in the floating wind farm technology. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Norwegian research institute SINTEF Ocean, which is a leading innovator in this technology, HEREMA added.
