Greece launches free home delivery of high-cost medicines

In a European first, Greece has begun offering free home delivery of high-cost medicines to patients, starting June 16, through its national health insurance agency EOPYY.

The initiative is expected to benefit approximately 139,000 citizens, including cancer patients and those with chronic conditions, who regularly rely on EOPYY pharmacies.

EOPYY President Theano Karpodini called the program a milestone in public health service. “Being the first in Europe to offer free home delivery of high-cost medicines makes us proud—and also increases our responsibilities,” she said.

Patients can now receive medications, including those requiring refrigeration, at their home, office, or summer residence within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the location. The process is free of charge, with logistics handled by certified providers adhering to strict standards for safety, privacy, and temperature control.

Prescriptions must be submitted electronically, and applications can be made via eopyy.gov.gr, or with help from pharmacies, citizen service centers, and the 18181 helpline.
