Reminder for the forgetful: How many units is the Eid Prayer and how is it performed?

As Muslims around the world gather for the spiritual morning of Eid, one frequently asked question remains: "How many units is the Eid prayer and how is it performed?" Here’s a brief reminder for those in need of a refresher.
How Many Rakats Is the Eid Prayer?
The Eid prayer consists of two rakats.
- According to the Hanafi school, it is considered wajib (obligatory).
- According to the Shafi’i and Maliki schools, it is regarded as a confirmed Sunnah (sunnah muakkadah).
The prayer is performed in congregation after sunrise, roughly 45 minutes after dawn prayer, on the first morning of both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
How to Perform the Eid Prayer
First Rakat:
- Make the intention:
“I intend to perform the Eid prayer for the sake of Allah, following the imam.” - Say Allahu Akbar and begin the prayer.
- Recite Subhanaka (opening supplication).
- Say three additional takbirs (Allahu Akbar), raising hands to the ears and letting them fall to the sides each time.
- On the fourth takbir, do not raise hands; go directly into ruku (bowing).
- Continue the prayer as usual.
Second Rakat:
- After standing up, the imam recites Al-Fatiha and a short surah.
- Again, three additional takbirs are said.
- After the third, go to ruku without raising the hands.
- Complete the prostrations and final sitting, recite Tashahhud, Salawat, and Rabbana, then give salams to finish the prayer.
The Eid Khutbah (Sermon)
- Delivered after the prayer by the imam.
- Unlike Friday khutbah, it is not obligatory but recommended to listen.
Sunnahs of Eid Morning
- Perform ghusl (ritual bath).
- Wear clean and festive clothing.
- On Eid al-Fitr: Eat something sweet (e.g., dates) before the prayer.
- On Eid al-Adha: Do not eat until after the animal sacrifice.
🕌 Eid prayer is more than just a ritual; it represents unity, peace, and spiritual renewal.
