As part of the commemoration event, Kosovo President Vjosa Osmani, representatives of institutions and organisations, and families of those who disappeared during the war laid wreaths at the monument to missing persons in the garden of the Kosovo Assembly.

President Osmani said that with Kosovo's accession to the Council of Europe, families of missing persons will have the opportunity to file a lawsuit against Serbia in the European Court of Human Rights.

Stating that 27 April is the most painful day in Kosovo's history and will remain as an open wound until the fate of the disappeared is revealed, Osmani said: "Serbia continues to sleep on mass graves and commit a double crime. Because it committed the crime once and did its best to hide it by hiding the traces of the crime even after 25 years."

In his speech, Osmani also accused Serbia of violating the agreement on missing persons and ignoring requests to open the archives of the Serbian police and army on the disappeared during the war.

In the Kosovo War of 1998-1999, more than 10,000 Kosovars, mostly Albanians, were killed and over 1 million Kosovars of different ethnic groups were forced to flee their homes.

It is estimated that there are more than 1600 people, mostly Albanians, who lost their lives in the Kosovo War but whose bodies have not yet been found.
