Gerapetritis urges renewed push for Western Balkans’ EU integration
Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis called for fresh momentum in advancing the European integration of the Western Balkans following talks with Albanian Foreign Minister Elisa Spiropali, stressing that EU membership remains the only viable path to long-term peace and stability in the region.
Recalling Greece’s role in launching the Thessaloniki Agenda, Gerapetritis said Athens continues to lead efforts to support the region’s European perspective. With Greece set to assume the EU Council presidency in the second half of 2027, he said the country is prepared to take initiatives to accelerate accession processes.
He reaffirmed Greece’s support for enlargement based on merit and reforms, welcoming Albania’s progress this year with the opening of accession negotiation chapters. Gerapetritis also stressed the importance of fulfilling obligations related to the “Fundamentals,” particularly the protection of the rights of the indigenous Greek National Minority.
The minister highlighted the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation, noting that the Greek minority in Albania and Albanian migrants in Greece serve as bridges between the two societies.
Spiropali described Greece as Albania’s strategic partner and emphasized that bilateral relations are built on shared NATO membership and a common EU future. She said Albania aims to complete accession negotiations by 2027 and thanked Greece for its continued support.
The two ministers agreed on the potential to further expand cooperation in areas including trade, energy, investment, connectivity, tourism, education, and culture, while reaffirming their commitment to constructive dialogue on bilateral and regional issues.
