EU committee backs Thessaloniki-Central Europe rail link
An amendment supporting a railway connection between Thessaloniki and Central Europe via Skopje, Ljubljana and Vienna was unanimously adopted at the 25th meeting of the EU-North Macedonia Joint Parliamentary Committee in Skopje.
The amendment was tabled by New Democracy and European People’s Party MEP Manolis Kefalogiannis and calls for the swift conclusion and effective implementation of an agreement on the cross-border rail connection.
Corridor X gains renewed focus
The proposed connection forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network and Corridor X, linking Greece with the Western Balkans and Central Europe.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee said the agreement would strengthen regional connectivity and contribute to the integration of the Western Balkans into European transport networks.
The amendment also links the development of Corridor X with broader efforts to improve European transport infrastructure across the Western Balkans.
Thessaloniki positioned as regional hub
The initiative forms part of wider efforts to expand cross-border infrastructure and strengthen transport links between Southeast Europe and the rest of the continent.
The amendment highlights the strategic role of Greece and Thessaloniki in European connectivity between the Balkans, Central Europe and the Mediterranean.
“Greece must be at the heart of European networks,” Kefalogiannis said. He described the adoption of the amendment as an important step toward strengthening Greece’s railway connection with the Western Balkans and Europe.
